چکیده

We have constructed a model which describes the optical emission from ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), and have used it to constrain the parameters of seven ULX systems. Our model assumes a binary nature for ULXs, and accounts for optical emission from an X-ray irradiated companion star and accretion disk. We apply our model to six different ULX optical counterparts observed with HST, and one observed with the ESO VLT, and determine the mass, radius and age of the donor stars in these systems. In addition, we obtained constraints for the black hole (BH) mass in some cases. We use the mass accretion rate implied by the X-ray luminosity of these sources as an additional constraint on the donor star, by assuming the mass transfer is driven by the stellar nuclear evolution. We find that in general the donors are older and less massive than previously thought, and are consistent with being of spectral type B. We discuss how these results affect our understanding of the evolution and history of ULXs. Where we can constrain the BH masses, we find them to be consistent with stellar mass BHs or intermediate mass BHs of order ∼ 100M⊙. We make predictions for future observations of optical/infrared ULX counterparts, calculating binary periods for different BH masses in each of the seven sources.

Elemental Abundances of Nearby Galaxies through High Signal-to-noise Xmm-newton Observations of Ulxs

In this paper, we examined XMM Newton EPIC spectra of 14 ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in addition to the XMM RGS spectra of two sources (Holmberg II X-1 and Holmberg IX X-1). We determined oxygen and iron abundances of the host galaxy’s interstellar medium (ISM) using K-shell (O) and L-shell (Fe) X-ray photo-ionization edges towards these ULXs. We found that the oxygen abundances closely...

On The Robustness of Cool Disc Components in Bright ULXs

In this letter, we comment on the robustness of putative cool (kT ≃ 0.2 keV) accretion disc components in the X-ray spectra of the most luminous (LX ≃ 10 erg/s) ultra-luminous Xray sources (ULXs) in nearby normal galaxies. When compared to stellar-mass black holes, the low disc temperatures observed in some ULXs may imply intermediate-mass black hole primaries. Recent work has claimed that such...

Observational Evidence for Intermediate-mass Black Holes in Ultra-luminous X-ray Sources

Evidence is mounting that some Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) may contain accreting intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs). We review the current observational evidence for IMBH-ULXs. While low-luminosity ULXs with LX ∼ 10 39.5 erg s (assuming isotropic emission) are consistent with mildly X-ray beamed high-mass X-ray binaries, there are a considerable number of ULXs with larger X-ray lumin...

Multiwavelength Observations of Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources

Multiwavelength observations may help us understand the physical nature of the ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) found in external galaxies. Enabled by the arcsecond X-ray source positions now available from Chandra, there has been significant recent progress in the identification of optical and radio counterparts to ULXs. Recent results are reviewed on the identification of optical stellar co...

Models for the Observable System Parameters of Ultraluminous X-ray Sources

We investigate the evolution of the properties of model populations of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), consisting of a black-hole accretor in a binary with a donor star. We have computed models corresponding to three different populations of black-hole binaries, motivated by our previous studies. Two of the models invoke stellar-mass (∼ 10M ) black-hole binaries, generated with a binary pop...
